Law List: Avoid High Heels at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece

Law List: Avoid High Heels at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece

Words by Grace West

Since its inception, the Acropolis of Athens in Athens, Greece has always been about reverence and order, and guess what? When it comes to high heels, the structure is still laying down the law. Many ancient landmarks in Greece strictly prohibit many fashionista’s favorite footwear: the stiletto. If you think your style is above the law, you might be paying a fine as expensive as your plane ticket!

This highly specific regulation was introduced back in 2009 with the intent of protecting ancient ruins from potential damage caused by a high heel’s sharp edge. Ancient Grecian sites are already at risk of weathering and erosion caused by a great deal of foot-traffic and cracks from a pointy-heeled shoe are one problem that these aging monuments don’t particularly need.

Choosing to ignore this law can result in a fine of up to €900 (over $1000) and that receipt isn’t a souvenir you necessarily want to bring home with you.

If you have begun fantasizing about your dream Greek vacation and have already started planning your outfits, it might be better to leave the high heels in your closet—or you just might be writing yourself into the wrong side of history (and police log).
